About This Major . . .
This degree is designed for a student who has completed a technical certificate from an Area Technical College and would like to scaffold that degree into an Associate of Applied Science Degree OR for a student who has earned a Technical Certificate/s from CMU Tech and has not earned an associate degree or higher utilizing the Technical Certificate credits.
For those students earning a technical certificate from an Area Technical College, the technical certificate must be from a regionally accredited institution or an institution with which CMU Tech/CMU has an articulation agreement for the area of study. The student may transfer up to 43 Technical Certificate hours into the AAS in Applied Technology degree. The completed Technical Certificate, any additional technical coursework (from a single area of study) from CMU Tech needed to bring the total technical hours to 43 hours and the completion of 17 hours of Essential Learning (general education) coursework from CMU and any other degree requirements will allow the student to earn the Associate of Applied Science in Applied Technology.
For those students who have earned Technical Certificates from CMU Tech, the student may apply up to 43 Technical Certificate hours towards the AAS in Applied Technology degree. Students may use courses taken from multiple certificates earned at CMU Tech to apply to the 43 credit hours needed. To earn the AAS in Applied Technology, the completed Technical Certificate/s and any additional technical coursework from CMU Tech needed to bring the total technical hours to 43 hours and the completion of 17 hours of Essential Learning (general education) coursework from CMU and any other degree requirements will allow the student to earn this Associate of Applied Science in Applied Technology.

The Associate of Applied Science in Applied Technology degree is designed to provide students with an individualized, quality education in a technology area leading to a technical specialty and a core knowledge through Essential Learning (general education) courses. Applied Technology is an area which encourages students to develop the necessary conceptual understanding, disciplinary skills and subject knowledge to investigate and solve real-life problems. The Career and Technical Certificate in addition to the Essential Learning (general education) hours will prepare students for employment with needed technical and academic skills.

- A minimum of 15 of the final 30 credit hours must be taken from CMU/CMU Tech.
- Students must complete all other degree requirements.
- Up to 43 credits from a completed CTE Certificate may be applied to the AAS in Applied Technology. Students completing a CTE Certificate of less than 43 credit hours must complete additional credit hours from a single CMU Tech technical certificate as approved by an advisor/department head to reach the 43 hour requirement.

All CMU/CMU Tech associate graduates are expected to demonstrate proficiency in specialized knowledge/applied learning, quantitative fluency, communication fluency, critical thinking, personal and social responsibility, and information literacy. In addition to these campus‐wide student learning outcomes, graduates of this major will be able to:
- Locate, gather and organize evidence on an assigned topic addressing a course or discipline-related question or a question of practice in a work or community setting. (Specialized Knowledge/Applied Learning)
- Use program-level mathematical concepts and methods to understand, analyze, and explain issues in quantitative terms.(Quantitative Fluency)

Institutional Degree Requirements
The following institutional degree requirements apply to all CMU and CMU Tech Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degrees. Specific programs may have different requirements that must be met in addition to institutional requirements.
- 60 semester hours minimum.
- Students must complete a minimum of 15 of the final 30 semester hours of credit at CMU/CMU Tech.
- 2.00 cumulative GPA or higher in all CMU/CMU Tech coursework.
- A course may only be used to fulfill one requirement for each degree/certificate.
- No more than six semester hours of independent study courses can be used toward the degree.
- Non-traditional credit, such as advanced placement, credit by examination, credit for prior learning, cooperative education and internships, cannot exceed 20 semester credit hours for an AAS degree.
- Pre-collegiate courses (usually numbered below 100) cannot be used for graduation.
- Capstone exit assessment/projects (e.g., Major Field Achievement Test) requirements are identified under Program-Specific Degree Requirements.
- The Catalog Year determines which program sheet and degree requirements a student must fulfill in order to graduate. Visit with your advisor or academic department to determine which catalog year and program requirements you should follow.

Advising Process and DegreeWorks

DegreeWorks is an online degree audit tool available in MAVzone. It is the official record used by the Registrar’s Office to evaluate progress towards a degree and determine eligibility for graduation. Students are responsible for reviewing their DegreeWorks audit on a regular basis and should discuss questions or concerns with their advisor or academic department head. Discrepancies in requirements should be reported to the Registrar’s Office.
Graduation Process
Students must complete the following in the first two months of the semester prior to completing their degree requirements:
- Review their DegreeWorks audit and create a plan that outlines how unmet requirements will be met in the final semester.
- Meet with their advisor and modify their plan as needed. The advisor must approve the final plan.
- Submit the “Intent to Graduate” form to the Registrar’s Office to officially declare the intended graduation date and commencement ceremony plans.
- Register for all needed courses and complete all requirements for each degree sought.

If a student's petition for graduation is denied, it will be their responsibility to apply for graduation in a subsequent semester. A student's “Intent to Graduate” does not automatically move to a later graduation date.
